Every POS demo looks impressive—fast scanning, a clean receipt, a satisfying beep. The differences that actually matter only show up a few months in, once you are running real volume, adding a second outlet, or trying to pull a report you did not know you would need. We see the same buying mistakes repeated by retail businesses in Karachi and across Pakistan.
Start with what happens after the sale, not during it
Billing speed matters, but it is rarely what separates a good POS system from a frustrating one. What matters more is what happens after: does stock update automatically, can you see which products are actually profitable, and can staff process a return without a manager's intervention every time.
Multi-branch is a different problem than single-outlet
A POS that works fine for one shop can fall apart the moment you open a second location—for example, a flagship outlet in Karachi followed by branches in Lahore or Islamabad. Ask specifically whether reporting is consolidated across outlets, whether stock transfers between branches are tracked, and whether you can see branch-wise performance without manually combining spreadsheets from each location.
Offline reliability is not a minor detail
Internet drops happen. A POS that stops billing entirely during a connectivity issue is a real business risk during peak hours. Ask how the system behaves offline and how it syncs once connectivity returns—this is one of the more common gaps that only becomes obvious after go-live.
Questions worth asking before you commit
- Does stock update in real time as sales happen?
- Can reports be filtered by branch, product, category and staff member?
- How are discounts, returns and voids controlled and logged?
- What happens to billing if the internet connection drops?
Reporting is where the real value shows up
The businesses that get the most value from a POS system are the ones that actually use its reports—to spot which products to reorder, which are dead stock, and which staff member's till never quite balances. A POS that only bills but does not report meaningfully is only solving half the problem.
